Benjamin Barker, a talented barber, is transported to Australia on false charges engineered by the corrupt Judge Turpin, who covets Barker’s wife. Returning years later under the alias Sweeney Todd, he finds his wife destroyed and his daughter imprisoned in the judge’s household. Consumed by a lust for vengeance that metastasises into murderous madness, Todd forms an unlikely alliance with the resourceful and ruthlessly pragmatic pie-shop owner Mrs Lovett. Together they set Fleet Street alight – in ways the city will never forget.
Sweeney Todd is simultaneously a gothic thriller, a black comedy, an operatic tragedy, and a searing political indictment. Its genius lies in making us complicit: we laugh, we root for the villain, and then we confront what that says about us.
